How Much Does a Retaining Wall Cost in Western NC? (2026 Pricing)
Retaining wall costs in Asheville and WNC vary by material, height, and length. Here's an honest breakdown of what to expect in 2026.

If you live on a mountain property in Western North Carolina, you probably need a retaining wall — or you've got one that's failing. Either way, you want to know what it costs. Here's my honest breakdown.
What Do Retaining Walls Cost in WNC?
Every wall is different, but here's what I typically see:
- Natural stone (dry stack): $50–$125 per square foot
- Boulder walls: $40–$90 per square foot
- Segmental block: $35–$80 per square foot
- Timber: $25–$50 per square foot
Natural stone is the premium option — it looks timeless but takes more labor. Boulder walls give you a rugged, natural look. Block walls are engineered and strong, good for taller walls.
What Affects the Price?
Height. Walls over 4 feet need engineering and usually a permit. Taller walls need deeper footings and more reinforcement.
Length. Most walls are priced by the square foot of visible wall. Longer walls cost more overall but sometimes have a lower per-foot rate.
Material. This is the biggest variable. Stone looks the best but costs the most. Block is a solid mid-range option. Timber is the budget choice but doesn't last as long.
Drainage. Every wall needs drainage — gravel backfill, a pipe at the base, weep holes. If someone builds you a wall without drainage, walk away. Water pressure is the #1 reason retaining walls fail.
Site access. In the mountains, this is huge. If we can't get a machine to the wall, it's all manual labor and that costs more.
Soil. WNC soil is rocky, which slows excavation. Clay-heavy soil needs extra drainage work.
Some Real-World Examples
- Small garden wall (2ft × 20ft): $1,400–$3,500
- Seating wall by a patio (3ft × 15ft): $2,250–$5,625
- Slope retention (5ft × 30ft): $5,250–$15,000
- Terraced multi-level: $10,000–$40,000+
Why I Won't Skip Drainage
I've seen walls other guys built that are leaning or cracking after just a couple of years. Almost every time, it's because they skipped the drainage. Water builds up behind the wall and pushes it out. It's not a matter of if it'll fail — it's when.
Every wall I build gets proper drainage. It's not optional. It's the difference between a wall that lasts 3 years and one that lasts 30.
